Your Place in the Pew: Why Sunday Is Not Routine
Your Place in the Pew
By Jon Stephen McNiel
Each Sunday, we gather.
Same place. Same seat. Same routine.
Or so we think.
After hearing Alistair Begg teach from First Book of Samuel chapter 9, something changed in how I view that “routine.”
Saul wasn’t looking for a crown.
He was looking for donkeys.
Yet God was guiding every step.
While Saul searched, God spoke to Samuel:
“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man…” (1 Samuel 9:15–16)
What seemed ordinary…
was anything but.
Ordinary Moments. Eternal Purpose.
We do this all the time.
We assume:
- This is just another Sunday
- Just another sermon
- Just another seat
But what if it’s not?
What if your place in the pew is part of something divinely orchestrated?
A Pattern We Miss
Saul:
- Obeyed his father
- Listened to counsel
- Followed unexpected direction
Others:
- Pointed the way
- Played small but critical roles
Samuel:
- Listened to God
- Spoke truth faithfully
- Delivered exactly what God gave him
Nothing random.
Everything aligned.
And Then There’s Us
We walk into church carrying:
- Questions
- Burdens
- Distractions
And yet…
God has already:
- Prepared the message
- Positioned the messenger
- Placed YOU in the room
Not by accident.
The Pastor Is Not Samuel… But…
He has prayed.
Studied.
Sought direction.
And like Paul reminds us:
“We have this treasure in jars of clay…” (2 Corinthians 4:7)
The power isn’t in the man.
It’s in the message.
Your Responsibility
God’s Word will not fall to the ground…
Unless we let it.
So come:
- Ready
- Attentive
- Expectant
Because your place in the pew…
Is appointed.
