Man Such as This

When the World Recognizes the Spirit of God
“Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” — Genesis 41:38 (ESV)
There are moments in Scripture when unbelievers see what believers often overlook.
Pharaoh saw it in Joseph.
Nebuchadnezzar saw it in Daniel.
The governors of Babylon saw it in Daniel’s integrity.
King Darius saw it after the lions’ den.
The rulers who watched three Hebrew young men walk through a blazing furnace saw it in Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
These pagan rulers did not possess biblical theology. They were idol worshipers. Yet they repeatedly reached the same conclusion:
These men are different because the living God is with them.
That should cause every Christian man to ask an uncomfortable question.
Would anyone who works beside me reach the same conclusion?
Joseph: Excellence Cannot Be Hidden
Joseph’s life appeared to be one disappointment after another.
Sold by his brothers.
Falsely accused.
Forgotten in prison.
Yet wherever Joseph went, Scripture records the same remarkable observation.
“The LORD was with Joseph…” (Genesis 39)
God’s presence was evident before Joseph ever occupied a throne.
Eventually Pharaoh confessed,
“Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38)
Notice what Pharaoh admired.
Not Joseph’s intelligence alone.
Not his organizational skills.
Not his economic plan.
He recognized something greater.
Joseph possessed wisdom that could only come from God.
Young Christian men often think success depends upon networking, education, personality, or opportunity.
Scripture says otherwise.
Godly character opens doors that talent alone never can.
Daniel: Conviction Before Promotion
Daniel entered Babylon as a captive teenager.
Everything around him encouraged compromise.
A new language.
A new education.
New customs.
New gods.
The easiest path would have been quiet conformity.
Instead,
“Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself…” (Daniel 1:8)
Years later Nebuchadnezzar declared,
“Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings…” (Daniel 2:47)
Later he confessed,
“I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you…” (Daniel 4:8)
Even if Nebuchadnezzar misunderstood the true nature of God, he could not deny God’s power working through Daniel.
Daniel never demanded recognition.
He simply remained faithful.
God supplied the influence.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego:
Faith That Refuses to Bend
Most people remember the fiery furnace.
But they often forget the courage that came before it.
These young men respectfully answered the king,
“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… But if not… we will not serve your gods.” (Daniel 3:17–18)
Their obedience was not based on the expectation of rescue.
It rested upon God’s worthiness.
Nebuchadnezzar looked into the flames and exclaimed,
“Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?… I see four men… and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.” (Daniel 3:24–25)
When they emerged untouched,
Nebuchadnezzar praised the God of Israel before the entire empire.
Their greatest testimony came not from escaping hardship—
but from remaining faithful in the midst of it.
Daniel Again:
Integrity That Could Not Be Destroyed
Daniel eventually served under another pagan king—Darius.
Political rivals searched desperately for corruption.
They found none.
Scripture says,
“He was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.” (Daniel 6:4)
Imagine that.
No hidden dishonesty.
No manipulation.
No scandal.
No shortcuts.
No secret compromise.
The only way to destroy Daniel was to attack his relationship with God.
After Daniel survived the lions’ den,
King Darius publicly honored the God Daniel served.
Again…
A pagan ruler recognized the greatness of God because of the faithfulness of one man.
The Pattern Is Impossible to Ignore
Joseph.
Daniel.
Shadrach.
Meshach.
Abednego.
Different centuries.
Different occupations.
Different governments.
Different trials.
Yet every one of them displayed the same characteristics:
- They feared God more than men.
- They pursued excellence.
- They refused compromise.
- They remained humble.
- They trusted God with the outcome.
- Their lives pointed beyond themselves.
And eventually…
The unbelieving world noticed.
Young Lions Entering Today’s Marketplace
Today’s business world desperately needs men like these.
Not merely Christians who attend church.
Not merely men who wear Christian apparel.
Not merely people who quote Bible verses online.
It needs men whose integrity cannot be purchased.
Managers whose honesty survives pressure.
Employees who work diligently when no one is watching.
Business owners who refuse deception.
Leaders whose wisdom reflects God’s truth.
The marketplace is filled with talent.
It is starving for character.
The promotion may come.
It may not.
Recognition may arrive.
It may not.
Neither Joseph nor Daniel sought influence.
They sought faithfulness.
God supplied the influence.
The Greatest Testimony
One day Pharaoh looked across his kingdom and asked,
“Can we find a man like this…?”
May employers ask the same.
May clients ask the same.
May coworkers ask the same.
May our families ask the same.
Not because we seek applause—
but because our lives consistently reveal the presence of Christ.
The world has always recognized extraordinary ability.
What it rarely encounters is extraordinary character.
That is the mark of a man led by the Spirit of God.
May today’s Young Lions become men of whom the world can honestly say:
“There is something different about him.”
Because there is.
The Spirit of the living God dwells within him.
